Frequently Asked Questions

What is Modern Pilates? What is a Xformer/Megaformer vs. Traditional Reformer?

“Modern Pilates” is a broad term used for Pilates-inspired fitness formats that have evolved beyond the traditional Pilates method. Many of these concepts incorporate movements inspired by Pilates while combining them with strength training, high-intensity group fitness, repetitions, time under tension, and specialized resistance machines.

The Xformer and Megaformer are examples of these specialized machines. While they may resemble the traditional Reformer in some ways, they are designed for a different style of workout and programming. Classes often emphasize muscular endurance, controlled repetitions, time under tension, and a high-energy group fitness experience.

No—these concepts are not the same as the Pilates method developed by Joseph Pilates.

At Soteria, we are rooted in Joseph Pilates’ original principles, methods, and traditional apparatus, while adapting the work to the individual body. We are not a high-intensity machine fitness concept, nor do we believe Pilates should simply be about performing more repetitions, increasing resistance, or pushing the body to fatigue.

Our focus is on purposeful movement, strength, mobility, control, alignment, and long-term physical health.

We also believe Pilates is just one part of a complete movement practice. That’s why Soteria incorporates Pilates, progressive strength training, and recovery into our approach.

We’re not trying to make movement harder just for the sake of intensity. We’re trying to make it more intelligent.

We want you to leave feeling stronger—not beaten up.

We’re rooted in the original teachings of Joseph Pilates, but we’re not strictly classical.

We respect the traditional Pilates method, its principles, equipment, and repertoire. But we also believe Pilates should meet the body in front of us—not force every body into the same sequence.

Today’s bodies are different. We sit for hours, work at computers, deal with postural imbalances, injuries, stiffness, and the physical demands of modern life.

At Soteria, we take the principles Joseph Pilates established and apply, adapt, and modify them to help your body move better today.

We don’t believe that a Pilates class should simply be a memorized series of exercises.

Our instructors are trained to observe you, understand your movement, and make adjustments based on what your body needs.

That means two people in the same class may not perform an exercise exactly the same way—and that’s intentional.

Your body isn’t a template. Your Pilates shouldn’t be either.

Real bodies. Real goals. Every stage of life.

We’re here for the person who wants to:

  • Build strength
  • Improve posture
  • Move with less stiffness
  • Improve balance and mobility
  • Support healthy aging
  • Return to exercise after an injury
  • Complement another sport or activity
  • Feel stronger and more confident in their body

You don’t need to look like a Pilates instructor to benefit from Pilates.

Pilates is the method. Your body is the starting point.

Absolutely not.

We work with people who are brand new to Pilates as well as experienced movers and athletes.

Your instructor can modify exercises, adjust resistance, change positioning, or choose a different movement entirely based on your experience and your body.

You don’t have to be “good at Pilates” to start Pilates.

That’s exactly why you’re coached.

You don’t need to be flexible, fit, experienced, or know anything about Pilates before you start. Our instructors are trained to modify and adapt movement for different bodies, ages, abilities, and goals.

Whether you’re starting from scratch, returning after an injury, or looking to take your training to the next level, we meet you where you are and help you progress from there.

Your body doesn’t have to fit Pilates. Pilates is adapted to help your body.

Both are coached experiences, but private training gives your instructor the ability to focus entirely on you.

Group Pilates gives you expert coaching within a small-group environment.

Private Training allows us to build a program specifically around your goals, movement patterns, limitations, and progression.

We also offer duet and small-group training for people who want a more personalized experience while sharing the session with someone else.

At Soteria, our classes are built around three pillars of movement: Pilates, Strength, and Recovery. Each pillar plays a different role in helping you build a stronger, more capable body for life.

Our four signature class types allow you to choose the right training experience for your goals—or combine them to create a more complete movement practice.

EMPOWER

Pilates • Move with control

Our signature Pilates experience, rooted in the principles of Joseph Pilates and adapted for the modern body. Expect purposeful movement, intelligent sequencing, strength, mobility, and individualized coaching.

Best for: building foundational strength, improving movement quality, posture, balance, and body awareness.

REFORM

Pilates • Challenge your strength

A progressive Reformer-focused class that builds strength, stability, coordination, and control through the Pilates apparatus.

Best for: those ready to progress their Pilates practice and develop greater strength and physical capacity.

RESTORE

Recovery • Move, release, restore

A slower, intentional class focused on mobility, flexibility, breath, recovery, and restoring quality of movement.

Best for: active recovery, improving mobility, reducing stiffness, and giving your body the space it needs to recover and adapt.

STRENGTH

Strength • Build your capacity

Progressive resistance training designed to complement your Pilates practice. We use weights and other forms of resistance to build muscular strength, stability, power, and resilience.

Best for: building and maintaining muscle, improving bone and joint health, and developing the strength needed for everyday life.

The Soteria Approach

You don’t have to choose between Pilates, strength, and recovery.

Pilates helps you move well.
Strength helps you build capacity.
Recovery helps you sustain it.

Together, they create a more complete approach to movement and long-term physical health.

Your body is always changing. Your training should, too.

Our instructors aren’t trained in a weekend. They complete comprehensive education over 6–12 months, studying Pilates, anatomy, biomechanics, movement assessment, modifications, programming, and coaching.

They learn to work with different bodies, ages, fitness levels, goals, and movement limitations—not simply memorize exercises and sequences.

Our instructors don’t just teach the class. They coach you.

Yes. That’s what coaching means at Soteria.

Throughout your session, your instructor is observing your alignment, breathing, control, strength, mobility, and movement patterns.

They’ll correct you when you need it, modify an exercise when your body needs something different, support you when you’re struggling, and challenge you when you’re ready to progress.

You won’t be left to figure it out on your own.

Absolutely. We love having men and teens at Soteria.

Pilates isn’t a women’s workout. It’s a comprehensive movement system that can benefit anyone who wants to build a stronger, more mobile, and more capable body.

For many men, Pilates provides something that’s often missing from traditional strength training: mobility, flexibility, core control, posture, and balanced movement.

Whether you’re lifting weights, playing golf, running, cycling, or simply sitting at a desk all day, Pilates can help you move better and support the strength you’ve already built.

Strength is important. So is the ability to move well.

Can I bring my teenager to Pilates?

Absolutely. We love working with teens!

We welcome young athletes as young as 10 with parent supervision, especially those involved in school and competitive sports.

For growing athletes, Pilates and strength training can be a valuable part of a well-rounded movement program, helping develop:

  • Core strength and control
  • Postural awareness
  • Joint stability
  • Mobility and flexibility
  • Balance and coordination
  • Body awareness
  • Foundational strength

Our goal isn’t to replace their sport. It’s to help build the physical foundation that supports it.

Whether they’re playing soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, dance, or another sport, learning how to control and strengthen their bodies can help them become more capable athletes and develop healthy movement habits for life.

Start strong. Move well. Stay strong.

I especially like the teen section because it connects directly to your Pilates + Strength + Recovery philosophy rather than positioning Pilates as just another workout.

Go Beyond the Scale

At Soteria Pilates, progress is about more than what you weigh. It’s about understanding your body, so you can make smarter decisions about your strength, movement, and long-term health.

Our InBody 380 assessment gives you a detailed look at your body composition, including muscle mass, skeletal bone density, inflammation markers, hydration levels and other key measurements that help us see what a traditional scale simply can’t.

We use these insights as part of our personalized approach to help you establish a baseline, track meaningful progress, and create a plan that supports your goals and longevity.

Already a Soteria client? Your InBody assessment is incorporated into your group class memberships.

Not a member? You’re welcome, too. Visit our Maitland location or Winter Garden location for a standalone InBody 380 scan and consultation for $50.

Know your body. Track what matters. Move forward with purpose.
