New to Pilates? 10 Common Questions Answered

trying pilates winter garden

Thinking about trying Pilates but feeling unsure where to start? You’re not alone! At Soteria Pilates Winter Garden, we work with new students every week who arrive curious, excited, and a little nervous. Whether you’re brand new to fitness or transitioning from other workouts, Pilates is an incredibly welcoming and effective way to build strength, improve mobility, and boost your confidence—without the pressure of mirrors or comparison.

Our studio is rooted in the belief that movement should be inclusive, mindful, and empowering, not performative. Here, you’re free to show up as you are and grow at your own pace. To help ease those first-time jitters, we’re breaking down 10 common questions and concerns many new students have. Let’s get into it!

1. Do I Need to Be Flexible to Start Pilates?

Absolutely not. Pilates helps you become more flexible, but no baseline flexibility is required to begin. We meet you where you are, and improvements come with time. It’s about movement that works, not perfect poses.

2. Is Pilates Only for Women?

No way. While Pilates is often associated with women, it was originally created by Joseph Pilates, a man, for both men and women. Our non-judgmental, inclusive Pilates studio welcomes everyone—regardless of gender, age, or background. Many athletes and men love the benefits of increased core strength, control, and mobility.

3. Will I Get a Good Workout?

Yes! Don’t be fooled by the graceful movements—Pilates is sneaky challenging. You’ll work your entire body, especially deep core muscles you didn’t know existed. It’s low-impact but highly effective, and adaptable to all fitness levels.

4. What Should I Wear?

Simple, fitted athletic wear that allows for movement is best. Avoid anything too loose, as instructors need to see your alignment to ensure proper form. And no worries—no mirrors means less self-consciousness, more self-connection.

5. How Often Should I Do Pilates?

For beginners, we recommend 2–3 sessions per week. That’s enough to start noticing changes in strength, posture, and energy levels, especially if you stay consistent. Pilates is sustainable movement—it fits into your life, not the other way around.

6. What’s the Difference Between Reformer and Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is performed on the floor using your body weight. Reformer Pilates, which we specialize in at Soteria, uses a spring-based machine to add resistance and support. It’s a mindful and functional way to build smart strength and flexibility at once.

7. Will I Lose Weight?

Pilates supports weight loss by increasing lean muscle mass, boosting metabolism, and improving posture. But at Soteria, we focus less on how you look—and more on how you feel. This isn’t about appearance; it’s about strength, freedom, and feeling at home in your body.

8. Can I Do Pilates If I Have an Injury?

Yes, with proper instruction. Our certified teachers are trained to offer modifications for injuries and limitations. Be sure to let us know before class so we can support you safely. This is Pilates for everybody, and we mean that.

9. Do I Need Experience to Join a Class?

Not at all! We offer beginner-friendly Pilates classes and guide newcomers through proper form and technique. You’ll feel supported and never out of place—mirrors not required, expectations left at the door.

10. How Can I Get Started?

That’s the easy part, and now is the perfect time!
